Apostille, Legalisation, and Sworn Translation in Indonesia

Understand the sequence, differences, and key questions before using Indonesian or foreign documents abroad.

Apostille, legalisation, and sworn translation are often mentioned together, although they serve different functions. Choosing the wrong sequence can lead to rejection or duplicated work.

Three different functions

An apostille authenticates the origin of a signature, the capacity of the signatory, and the seal or stamp on a public document for cross-border use under the applicable framework. Consular legalisation follows a route specified by a country or authority. Translation changes the language; it does not authenticate the original signature.

The sequence is not always the same

Some recipients require authentication first and translation afterward; others request an official translation and additional certification. The sequence depends on the destination country, document type, language, and recipient instructions.

  • Ask the receiving authority before starting.
  • Keep names and document formats consistent across the source, translation, and application forms.

Frequently requested documents

Birth, marriage, divorce, diploma, transcript, power-of-attorney, corporate, and court documents often appear in cross-border processes. Each category may have a different route and requirement.

How to request an initial assessment

State the destination country, receiving authority, document type, source and target languages, and deadline. Initial photos or scans should be sent through an agreed channel and may be watermarked before an order is confirmed.

Important note

This article provides general information, not legal advice. Requirements, institutional policies, and document acceptance may differ or change. For a specific matter, consult qualified Indonesian counsel or the receiving authority.
